Why you must eat itPeanuts hold their whole shape in a cloudy, sweet broth. Soft enough to crush with a finger, yet in the mouth they give way just before they dissolve. Sweet, firmly so, but it doesn't cling. The usual order is to drop in a soft egg and drink it warm. It sits near the mouth of Zhongshan Road and opens early, so many take it as breakfast with youtiao and pastries. A single bowl, sitting down to catch your breath before the walk, suits it well too.
Around 1945 the founder, Huang Zehe, carried a shoulder-pole along Lujiang Road and Zhongshan Road, selling peanut soup to dock workers and travellers. In 1950 he took the shop at 22 Zhongshan Road, and the bowl became a Xiamen fixture. Besides the soup, the old house keeps the city's morning snacks under one roof — Minnan spring rolls, rice cakes, shacha noodles, oyster omelette and mee sua paste.
