Ajizai (Jizhi Baihuo)
×Coconut Pastry
Why you must eat itA baked pastry of thin, flaky layers around a white filling of coconut and sugar. Bite it and the crust crumbles away as the sweet coconut scent opens up. A plain, nostalgic sweetness, not oily. Alongside mung-bean cake and savoury pies, it has long been a Xiamen teatime sweet. The Zhongshan Road shop has a retro fit-out with tea and seating upstairs, and many carry a box home as a gift.
An old Xiamen pastry house that still hand-makes traditional Minnan teatime sweets — coconut pastries, savoury filled pies, mung-bean cake and garlic-sugar twists. The Zhongshan Road branch, under the name "Jizhi Baihuo," restores an old building into a space to watch the baking and take tea, a sight on the street in itself. Well placed to close the walk on something sweet.
