Jin Feng Braised Pork Rice

×Braised Pork Rice

滷肉飯

Why you must eat itFinely chopped pork belly braised glossy in soy, sugar and spices like star anise, spooned over warm white rice. It's a common people's bowl found everywhere in Taiwan, and they say whether it's good shows a shop's true skill. The fat and soy soak into the rice and it crumbles apart in the mouth. A small bowl is light — right in the gaps of a walk of eating. Here it's usual to order it with a braised egg, pig's trotter or cabbage soup. Cheap and quick out, so even a line moves fast. At a counter or shared table, eaten fast and left fast — an everyday local plate.

Braised pork rice (written both lu rou fan and 滷肉飯 in Taiwan) is something like the foundation of Taiwanese eating, and Jin Feng is a long-running favorite near Dongmen and the CKS Memorial. It's a short walk from Yongkang, but easy to drop into as a route's close or a morning bowl. Open from morning to late, it's flexible on time. Cheap and varied, it can be built into a set with trotter, braised egg and soup. It's busy but turns fast. A good bowl for learning Taiwan's "basic taste." Mostly cash; hours and closing days can change, so confirm on the spot.
