Chun Shui Tang

×Pearl Milk Tea

珍珠奶茶

Why you must eat itStrong-brewed black tea shaken with milk, ice and sugar, black tapioca pearls (zhenzhu) settled at the bottom. Through a fat straw you draw up the chewy pearls with the sweet tea together. They taste of brown sugar when chewed — closer to a light dessert than a drink. Most shops let you set the ice and sugar; less sugar lets the tea come through. This Taiwan-born drink has spread worldwide, but a cup sat down with at its source is still different. After circling Yongkang Street, sit in an air-conditioned room and make it your sweet close.

Chun Shui Tang is a Taichung-born teahouse, known as one of the shops where pearl milk tea (zhenzhu naicha) began. It has several Taipei branches, and you can sit down with a cup in the Yongkang area. Unlike takeaway stall tapioca, its character is properly brewed tea served in cups, with light food and dim sum too. Sugar and ice adjust, so keep them low to check the tea itself. Claims to the drink's origin vary, but it is without doubt born of Taiwan's tea culture. Good as a route's close or a rest. Hours differ by branch, so confirm on the spot.
