Smoothie House (Simu Xi)

×Mango Shaved Ice

芒果雪花冰

Why you must eat itMilk-flavored snowflake ice shaved into a mound, heaped with cubes of ripe mango, then more mango sauce and a scoop of ice cream. It's the emblem of a Taiwanese summer dessert. The ice dissolves in the mouth; the mango is fiberless and softly sweet. One spoonful lifts ice, sauce and fruit together. The portion is large, so three around one bowl is the norm. Summer, when mango is in season, is best; off-season it swaps to strawberry or other fruit. In a corner of Yongkang Street, up a flight of stairs, eaten sitting in an air-conditioned room — a bowl to cool a body tired from walking.

Smoothie House (Simu Xi) is one of the shops that made Yongkang Street's mango ice famous, and it's widely known to travelers. Mango ice is found across Taiwan, but Yongkang has long been its gathering place. Prices sit above the night market, but make sense for the amount of fruit and the quality of the milk ice. It queues on summer weekends, so off-peak is easier. There are non-mango seasonal versions, but in-season mango is the way to go. Being cold, some pair it with hot tea to keep from chilling.
