Taikang Foods
×Xiekehuang (sesame pastry)
Why you must eat itBite it and the sesame and flakes scatter, so you eat it over your palm. There is no crab in it despite the name — it is called crab-shell yellow because the baked colour and shape resemble a crab's shell. Two kinds: sweet bean, and savoury with scallion and salt.
At 766 Nanjing Road East, near the western end of the pedestrian street. Trading since the 1930s, it keeps dim sum, prepared dishes and gift pastries under one roof. Most things are sold by weight, so you can take a little of several. Shanghai families still buy their gift boxes here.
