Park Hotel Bakery
×Butterfly Pastry
Why you must eat itOne bite and it shatters into layers. Butter and sugar, nothing else — yet carry the bag a block and your palm smells sweet. An hour in line on weekdays, two or three on holidays, and often sold out by evening. Go in the morning.
The bakery counter of the Park Hotel, opened 1934 and once the tallest building in East Asia. Shanghai's survey origin point sits inside this building — the city's official centre is still here. The butterfly pastry has been made by the hotel's pastry kitchen ever since, and remains the classic Shanghai souvenir.
