×Tiaotougao (red bean rice roll)
Why you must eat itRed bean rolled in glutinous rice, nothing more. It comes cool, and gives way just before it sticks to your teeth. The osmanthus scattered on top leaves scent behind rather than sweetness. Soft when fresh, firm within hours — finish it the day you buy it.
Founded 1875, an old house of Shanghai rice cakes at 636 Nanjing Road East. Besides tiaotougao they are known for qingtuan (spring only), shoutao and shuangniangtuan. You point at the glass case and buy by weight; there are seats at the back if you want to eat there.
