Dongdaemun Route
Dongdaemun, the market city that never sleeps. By day it runs on fabric and garment wholesale; by night the crowd turns over under dak-hanmari steam and the glow of DDP. From the chicken-pot alley to spicy jokbal, grilled gopchang and a street hotteok, six dishes with a flame lit somewhere at every hour, traced in walking order.
A district that moves to the market's rhythm
Dongdaemun is a wholesale city where Heunginjimun Gate, Pyeonghwa Market and DDP share the same ground. Garment trading peaks from late night into dawn, and the eating places keep their lights on through the night to sustain those who work it. So the timetable of food has a peak not only at noon but in the small hours. Leave the station, look up at the gate, and slip into the lanes between Jongno and Cheonggyecheon, where the smell of simmering chicken drifts from nowhere in particular. The face of a tourist sight and the face of a workers' kitchen overlap here, and that is the pleasure of walking it. Take your time, and turn toward the steam.
Pots, grills and something sweet
The food here divides by how the fire is used. Dak-hanmari, simmered slowly in clear broth, makes a calm span of time shared around a single chicken; the hand-cut kalguksu of the same alley is the quiet way to close it. As night deepens, Changsin-dong's spicy jokbal and grilled gopchang raise smoke and aroma, and soju bottles are opened. When your feet tire, eat a fresh seed hotteok griddled at the foot of DDP and Doosan Tower, or a wang mandu straight from the steamer, standing. The warmth of a pot, the richness of the grill, the sweetness of a cart — tasting three temperatures in one day is what makes Dongdaemun itself.
How to walk this route
Start at Dongdaemun Station, keep Heunginjimun Gate on your left and head for the dak-hanmari alley; from midday to early evening this is the place for chicken pot and kalguksu. Climb toward Changsin-dong for spicy jokbal, and from dusk the gopchang alley comes into its own. To finish, cross Cheonggyecheon and have a seed hotteok under the lights of DDP and Doosan Tower; add a wang mandu by the market for the next morning or a small hunger. It is about 100 minutes on foot, but shops light their fires at different hours — pots and grills at night, carts and dumplings by day or night — so it is wise to split your visit by time. Shared tables and queues are common, so walk it with a little room to spare.
