Why you must eat itA spicy plate known from Changsin-dong's jokbal lane. Pig's trotter is braised with aromatics, pulled apart and coated in a chilli sauce sharp with green pepper. The skin is gelatinous on the lips, and beneath the red sauce come sweetness, sourness and a heat that follows a beat later. Wrapped in lettuce or perilla with garlic and bean paste, the richness lightens. Many tables close with cold noodles or fried rice. It is food to reach for slowly, breaking a sweat, and a fixture for those who linger late over drinks in Dongdaemun.
One of the spicy-jokbal shops scattered from Changsin-dong toward Dongdaemun, busy into the small hours. Heat levels are usually adjustable, with small, medium and large portions. Takeout is available, and it doubles as a late supper for market workers.
