Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul

Why you must eat itUnder shaved ice lie green rice-flour worms (cendol), red beans, a syrup of coconut-palm sugar and coconut milk. The green strands slip down the throat, the palm-sugar molasses toasty and sweet. The taste marries as the ice melts, so take your time and stir from the bottom with the spoon. Penang afternoons are muggy, and a bowl of this after a spicy plate loosens the body.

A long-standing cendol shop on the lane of Lebuh Keng Kwee, off Penang Road. Teochew in style, its queue is the landmark. The Joo Hooi cafe right beside it also serves assam laksa and char koay teow. Prices and hours are a guide, and afternoon into evening is busiest.
