Rua do Cunha, a narrow street of food

The route's axis is Rua do Cunha, cutting through old Taipa. Only a hundred-odd metres of narrow street, yet sweet shops, noodle houses, congee stalls and souvenirs line both sides without a gap. Unlike the grand streets of the peninsula, two-storey old shops crowd shoulder to shoulder, signs and steam spilling into the lane. This is a place for small eats carried in the hand, not sit-down plates. Better to taste a mouthful at many shops than to finish one dish. The crowd swells from noon to evening, packing the narrow street shoulder to shoulder. Early, or once the sun leans low, is calmer to wander.

From crab congee to milk sweets

The street's food alternates the warm with cold sweets. First the crab congee — rice dissolved with the liquid of thin-fleshed water crabs, brought in the pot, sipped as you crack the legs. Bamboo-pressed noodles, beaten by a worker astride a pole, float fine in clear broth with wontons wrapping a whole shrimp. The sweets are varied too: agar-set dai choi gou, loosely set soy tofu pudding, steamed buffalo-milk custard and double-skin milk, each from its own shop. Close with a durian ice from a stall, a Southeast Asian fruit taken in. Weave salt and sweet, hot and cold, and two passes of the narrow street will not tire you.

How to walk this route

Come into old Taipa by bus or taxi from the peninsula or Cotai and stand at the mouth of Rua do Cunha from Rua de Fernão Mendes Pinto. To settle the stomach, start with crab congee, but share it — the portion is large. Then a bowl of wonton noodles at a bamboo-noodle shop, slurped before it softens. From here work the street back and forth between sweets. Tofu pudding and steamed milk come warm or cold, so take cold if it is hot. Agar jelly can be eaten on a pick while walking. Close with a durian ice from a stall. With energy to spare, pass through to the Taipa Houses or Pak Tai Temple for the old face of the island. The street is narrow and crowded, so avoid large bags and keep both hands free. Skip the after-noon peak and walk in the evening light — it is the most pleasant.

1soupCongee & Seafood Shop×Watery Crab CongeeThin-fleshed water crabs are combined with meaty mud crabs and cooked into long-simmered rice congee. The water crab's liquid dissolves into the rice, and every grain takes on crab sweetness and the sea. The rice loses its shape and thickens to a slurry. It arrives in the pot; you crack the legs and sip the hot congee. Ginger, spring onion and white pepper usually finish it. Best split among two or more, sometimes closed with dipped fried dough. Near the mouth of Rua do Cunha you may see a queue.Nearest Rua do Cunha / Old TaipaPrice MOP 60–100 per person 2NoodlesBamboo-Pressed Noodle Shop×Wonton Noodles (Bamboo-Pressed)A worker straddles a thick bamboo pole and presses the dough again and again with their weight. The resulting noodle is fine and springs against the teeth. It floats with wontons wrapping a whole shrimp in a clear broth of dried shrimp and pork bone. The noodle softens fast, so slurp it as it comes. A little red vinegar and chilli oil from the table sharpen it. Many choose the dry, tossed version instead. In a narrow Rua do Cunha shop, it is a bowl eaten quickly at a shared table.Nearest Rua do Cunha / Rua de Fernão Mendes PintoPrice MOP 35–50 3SweetsCool Sweets Stall×Agar Jelly (Dai Choi Gou)Agar drawn from seaweed is boiled down, flavoured with sugar, egg or fruit juice, and chilled to a set. Egg yellow or fruit colour sinks through the clear layers. It parts cleanly at the teeth, collapses cool in the mouth, and leaves only a light sweetness. Stalls cut it into squares on a plate, eaten with a pick or spoon. On a hot Taipa walk it cools you nicely. Some shops cut portions to take away.Nearest Around Rua do CunhaPrice MOP 15–25 4SweetsTofu Pudding Shop×Tofu Pudding (Douhua)Soy milk, ground and strained from the beans, is loosely set with brine or gypsum. A spoon draws no clean edge; it splits softly and slides apart. The warm bowl takes a brown-sugar syrup, the cold one iced sugar water. The taste is pale — only bean scent and a faint sweetness, little garnish. It is scooped from a large pot at the front, eaten there or carried off in a lidded bowl. In Rua do Cunha's sweet shops it sits beside firm tofu and soy milk. A light bowl for a footsore pause.Nearest Rua do Cunha / Rua de Fernão Mendes PintoPrice MOP 12–22 5SweetsMilk Dessert Shop×Steamed Milk PuddingBuffalo milk is mixed with egg white and sugar and steamed in the bowl to a loose set. A thin skin like tofu film forms on top; the spoon breaks through to soft milk beneath. The cold version is often served as double-skin milk, with a film above and below. The taste is quiet — only the richness of the milk and a held-back sweetness. You can also take a ginger-set version or one with red bean. In Taipa's sweet shops it is a bowl to savour slowly after a meal or on a rest.Nearest Rua do Cunha / Old TaipaPrice MOP 25–40 6SweetsIce Cream Stall×Durian Ice CreamRipe durian flesh is worked into a dense ice, handed over piled on a cone or in a cup. The cold tempers the smell, but in the mouth the peculiar sweet aroma and the sticky richness of the pulp open up. It has the density of fruit frozen whole rather than of ice cream. Many eat it standing at the stall, unbothered by the scent on their clothes. If durian is not for you, flavours like Job's tears or mango stand alongside.
