What Jinli is

Jinli is an old-style shopping street opened right beside the Wuhou Shrine, which honours Zhuge Liang and other heroes of the Three Kingdoms. Its name recalls that Chengdu, capital of Shu, was long a producer of brocade (jin). Today's Jinli is a tourist street rebuilt in Ming-and-Qing style, yet its stone lanes are packed with snack stalls, known as a place to see all of Chengdu's sweets and light bites at once. The crack of sandapao, the scent of frying guozi, the iron pan griddling danhonggao — an entrance to a food walk taken with the senses.

Chengdu's sweet and hot

Walking Chengdu's snacks, the first thing you notice is sweet and hot arriving in turn. Brown-sugar sweets — sandapao, tangyou guozi, bingfen, liang gao — are tucked between the spicy bobo ji and heartbroken jelly. This sweet-hot alternation sets the rhythm of a Chengdu food walk. Even the heat differs: Chengdu's pepper-numbness is finer than Chongqing's, leaning toward fragrance. Not to be worn down by the heat, cool the mouth with sweets and go a little at a time — the wise way to walk.

How to walk this route

Start at Gaoshengqiao on Metro Line 3. Enter the mouth of Jinli past the Wuhou Shrine and take your first with the made-to-order sandapao. Then follow the stone lane, eating tangyou guozi, danhonggao and bobo ji a little at a time. When the heat piles up, switch with heartbroken jelly and close by cooling your mouth with brown-sugar bingfen. Most are walking snacks, so the tables turn fast even when busy. Reckon about two hours on foot; the heat is adjustable at each shop, so order to your own limit. Weekends and evenings get very crowded — aim for early morning.

1SnacksJinli Sandapao×Sandapao (glutinous rice balls)A cook slams three glutinous-rice balls onto a brass plate, and the three cracks — pang, pang, pang — give sandapao its name. The balls roll through toasted soybean flour and are finished with brown-sugar syrup. Soft and chewy, plainly sweet. A fine break between spicy things, and a signature snack of Jinli.Nearest Gaoshengqiao StnPrice 10–15 CNY a plate 2SweetsJinli Tangyou Guozi×Tangyou guozi (fried sugar dumplings)Balls of glutinous dough fried slowly in oil sweetened with brown sugar, swelling amber, rolled in sesame and threaded on a bamboo stick. Crisp outside, nearly hollow and light within; a bite gives the faintly bitter sweetness of the sugar. Sold three or four to a skewer, best while still hot from the oil.Nearest Gaoshengqiao StnPrice 8–12 CNY a skewer 3SnacksHeji Danhonggao×Danhonggao (folded egg cake)Egg batter is griddled in a small brass pan; once one side puffs and colours, a filling goes on and it is folded in half. Choose sweet (brown sugar, red-bean, peanut) or savoury (minced pork, pickle, chili paste). The shell is sponge-light, the inside moist. Each is palm-sized and cooked one by one, so expect a short wait.Nearest Gaoshengqiao StnPrice 3–6 CNY each 4MeatJinli Bobo Ji×Bobo ji (cold skewers in chili oil)Poached chicken and vegetables threaded on bamboo, steeped in a cold bowl of chili oil, Sichuan pepper and crushed peanuts. You take skewers from the earthen bowl and pay by the sticks you finish. Being a cold dish, the pepper's numbness and sesame scent stand out within the heat, lighter than hotpot. A fresher green-pepper (tengjiao) style exists too.Nearest Gaoshengqiao StnPrice 1–3 CNY a stick, 30–50 CNY p.p. 5SnacksShangxin Liangfen (Jinli)×Shangxin liangfen (cold jelly noodles)Translucent liangfen — a cold jelly-noodle of pea or rice starch — dressed with chili oil, Sichuan pepper, aromatic vinegar and garlic. The name "heartbroken" is said to come either from crying at the heat or from Hakka homesickness. Smooth and easy down the throat, heat, sourness and numbness arriving together. A cold dish that goes down even in summer.Nearest Gaoshengqiao StnPrice 12–18 CNY a bowl 6SweetsJinli Hongtang Bingfen×Bingfen (chilled jelly, brown sugar)A clear, wobbling jelly set from plant seeds, drizzled with brown-sugar syrup and topped with crushed peanuts, glutinous pearls, raisins and haw. Cold and almost purely sweet, a bowl quiets a mouth flushed with heat. Soft enough to drink without chewing — a cold sweet Chengdu cannot do without in summer.Nearest Gaoshengqiao StnPrice 8–14 CNY a bowl
