×Steamed Rice Cake (Jing Gao)
Why you must eat itGlutinous rice flour is packed into a tiny wooden mold and steamed for a few minutes over rising steam. Round and white as a mirror, hence the name. Steamed through, it is lifted out on a bamboo stick and dusted with osmanthus honey, brown sugar, crushed sesame, and peanut. Chewy, soft, faintly sweet. Softest while hot, it suits eating one at a time on the walk. The white steam off the cart marks the street corner.
Jing gao is a plain sweet long sold on Xi'an's corners, its charm in the chew of glutinous rice and the scent of osmanthus. Most are handmade with wooden molds and steamers, some steamed to order. Toppings vary by cart. The price is small, a rough guide; hours are fluid, so ask on site.
