Why you must eat itThirty percent alcohol. The name dates from the Meiji era, when "electric" was shorthand for anything new, and the jolt on the tongue has not changed since. Custom says to chase it with a draft beer. Buy a ticket at the entrance before taking a seat.
Founded 1882, Japan's first bar, on the corner just across Edo Street from the Kaminarimon gate. Dazai Osamu and many other writers drank here. The ground floor is the bar; the second and third are a Western-style restaurant. Closed Tuesdays, plus two Mondays a month.
