Why you must eat itA whole potato sliced thin in a spiral, threaded onto a skewer, stretched out and deep-fried. Over twenty centimetres long, it looks like a swirl of potato chips strung along the stick. Fresh from the oil, they dust it with cheese, onion, seaweed-salt or honey-butter powder. Crisp outside, a little moist within. A skewer made for gnawing as you walk, and a symbol of the visual noise of Myeongdong's stalls. Your hands end up coated in powder, so grab a napkin.
Tornado potato (hoeori gamja) is one of the stall snacks that spread through social media in the 2010s, becoming a fixture on the young streets of Myeongdong and Hongdae. There is no set famous shop; judge by the queue and whether it is freshly fried. Some skewer a sausage alongside. Cash is the norm at stalls, and they are most common from afternoon into the night. It photographs well, but the crispness fades as it cools, so eat it the moment you take it.
