Takoyaki Doraku Wanaka

×Takoyaki

Why you must eat itBefore the sauce, eat one with just the dashi. The shell crisp, the middle collapsing soft, a bite hitting the hot octopus inside. Wanaka is an old house with its flagship in Sennichimae, its batter worked with bonito flakes for fragrance. The queue moves fast, the cook turning the iron without pause. Carry the little boat-tray and cool each one with your breath as you walk.

Wanaka, founded 1975, runs several shops around Dotonbori and Sennichimae and is a standard-bearer of Osaka takoyaki, trading under the "Takoyaki Doraku" sign. Besides the classic sauce and soy there are variants — Kujo scallion, mentai-mayo. There is a takeaway boat-tray and a spot to stand and eat at the shopfront.
