Kani Doraku (Dotonbori Head Shop)

×Grilled crab & kani-suki

Why you must eat itThe great moving crab sign is Dotonbori's landmark. Inside, a crab-through course unfolds — boiled, grilled, kani-suki hotpot, crab sushi. The grilled crab is plump and sweet, lifted from the shell and eaten with just salt. For the kani-suki you dip the meat in stock and draw it up, shabu-shabu style. This is a place to settle into a quiet tatami room, a proper meal set into the middle of the walk. Begin with the crab miso.

Kani Doraku, founded 1962, is a crab-cuisine specialist known for the giant moving crab sign at its Dotonbori head shop. Using live crab sourced from Hokuriku and elsewhere, it serves the range — boiled, grilled, kani-suki and crab sushi. You can order a course or single dishes, with a more affordable set at lunch. Many stop to photograph the Dotonbori landmark; a reservation is wise.
