Break it and steam and juice pour from the coarse-chopped pork and onion. 551 Horai is known for wrapping and steaming each one at the storefront, the rising steam off the white baskets its landmark. The takeaway box comes with mustard. It is hot, so let it cool a moment in its paper before you bite.
551 Horai, founded 1945, is Osaka's signature pork-bun shop; the "551" comes from its old telephone number. It has counters throughout Kansai's stations and department stores, but the queue and storefront steaming can be seen around Dotonbori and Namba too. Besides the buns, the shumai and ice lollies are standard souvenirs.
