Kushikatsu Daruma (Head Shop)

×Kushikatsu assortment

Why you must eat itBeef, prawn, onion, lotus root — each dipped in batter and fried crisp in fine breadcrumbs. You dip in the shared sauce once only; "no double-dipping" is the rule of Shinsekai. Fresh from the fryer it is hot, the coat light, the sauce surprisingly thin. The cabbage is free, to clear the palate. Order them one at a time and eat as each comes up.

Kushikatsu Daruma, founded in Shinsekai in 1929, is a pioneer of the fried skewer. Known for spreading the "no double-dipping" custom, its head shop sits at the foot of Tsutenkaku. Built around beef skewers, with prawn and seasonal vegetables ordered one at a time. Counter-centred — good for dropping in for a few or settling in.
