Yaowarat sweet stall
×Grass Jelly
เฉาก๊วย
Why you must eat itBlack grass jelly (chao kuai) cut into cubes, crushed ice and syrup poured over. Faintly bitter and slippery, just right to clear the palate after oily seafood. Some stalls serve warm sweet soups of bird's nest or white fungus, close to Chinese tonic cooking. A fitting close to a Chinatown night.
Yaowarat has long had Teochew and Cantonese sweet shops, centred on iced treats and simmered sweet soups. A different lineage from Western dessert, still carrying the logic of tonic food. Many stay open late, easy to drop into after a full loop of the stalls.
