Hongdae Dessert Café

×Croffle

홍대 디저트 카페 × 크로플

Why you must eat itA croissant dough pressed and baked in a waffle iron — the "croffle." The surface crisps into a waffle's lattice, and breaking it open the croissant's layers unfurl softly. Butter lifts off it, crunchy outside, moist within. The standards top it with vanilla ice cream, maple or Nutella, sauce pooling in the lattice hollows. Spread from Korean cafés, it is a sweet beloved by Hongdae's young. Paired with coffee, just the plate to close a walk.

The croffle spread through Korean cafés in the late 2010s and, via social media, became a standard dessert overnight. Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong are among the centres of that trend. This stands not for one shop but for the dessert cafés around Hongdae. Many make it fresh, pressing it on the iron only after you order. Toppings carry each shop's character, some pairing seasonal fruit or ice cream. Open midday to night. Cards and mobile payment dominate, and there can be a wait when busy.
