Why you must eat itA takeaway tteokbokki stall long planted on Hongdae's streets. The signature is rice cakes simmered sweet-hot in the pan, topped with a flat fritter (twigim) and doused again in tteokbokki sauce. The chew of the cakes and the crunch of the fritter layer nicely within the red sauce. The heat is not fierce and the sweetness leads, so it is easy even if you are not strong with spice. A mixed plate of sundae and fritters is popular too. Eating standing with a paper plate on a student-thronged corner is very Hongdae.

Jopok Tteokbokki ("gangster tteokbokki") is the nickname of a long-standing Hongdae street stall, said to have earned the name over time from its huge portions and tough-guy image. It has long been loved as the cheap, generous standard of a student district. Being a stall, cash is the norm and the sign is often Korean only. Open midday to late, it is a stop before or after drinking. Location and hours can change, so confirm on the spot.
