Why you must eat itHongdae is one of the centres of Korea's café culture. With an art school nearby, distinctive roast-your-own shops hide throughout the lanes. Hand-drip — beans chosen and brewed a cup at a time — is its emblem. A light roast brings floral, fruity acidity; a dark one a bitter finish, the shape of the cup wholly different shop to shop. Between the stalls and the chicken, a mouth tired of heat and oil is quieted here. A cup by the window, watching the young pass by, becomes the punctuation of a Hongdae walk.
The Hongdae area has an extremely high density of cafés, from big chains to independent roasteries. This stands not for one shop but for the roast-your-own cafés common in Hongdae. Beyond hand-drip, many serve espresso, lattes, and the Korean-popular dalgona (whipped coffee). Open midday to night, some running late. Cards and mobile payment dominate; cash-only shops are, if anything, rare. When busy, some limit table time.
