Ryukyu confectioner, Shuri

×Ryukyu confections (kunpen, hanaboru)

Why you must eat itBaked Ryukyu confections once offered at court celebrations and yearly rites. Kunpen wraps peanut or sesame paste in a thin skin, a plain lightly-scorched bun. Hanaboru is wheat and egg cut in flower shapes and baked, a crisp light dry sweet. In their mix of sugar, wheat, egg and lard show the marks of both Chinese dim sum and mainland sweets. A sweetness for a pause, with strong sanpin tea.

Ryukyu confections developed to receive Chinese investiture envoys and for royal rites, in many kinds, kunpen, hanaboru, chinsuko and chiirunko. They are still made at old shops in Shuri and Naha, and the keeping ones suit souvenirs. Prices and hours are a guide, so check on site.
