×Tako-Tamago (octopus with quail egg)

Why you must eat itBite the head off a little octopus on a skewer and a quail egg appears inside. The octopus, simmered sweet-savoury, is tender, and chewed with the egg the saltiness and rich yolk layer together. Small enough to finish in a bite, easy to eat one-handed as you walk. Its charm on the eye makes it a photo favourite, an emblem of the Nishiki food walk. Choose from medium, large or extra-large.

A shop toward the east of Nishiki, around Gokomachi. It once dealt in delicacies like rice seasonings and salted seafood, but as the market turned to tourism it launched the "tako-tamago" — a small octopus head stuffed with a quail egg — which became a signature Nishiki street snack. Delicacies still line the counter, and the tako-tamago comes boxed as a souvenir too.
