What Arashiyama is

Arashiyama sits at the western edge of Kyoto, where Togetsukyo spans the Katsura River. Drawn by the hills and river behind it, the bamboo grove path and the garden of Tenryuji, people come all year round. Nagatsuji Street, running from the Randen Arashiyama station toward the bridge, is the main road, lined with croquettes, sweets, matcha desserts and Kyoto souvenirs. Its cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves are especially famed, and being able to sit by the river to eat — an open, unhurried food walk — is what sets Arashiyama apart from the downtown Nishiki and Gion.

Riverside fried food and sweets

The Arashiyama food walk rests on fried food, sweets, and a cup by the river. Nakamuraya's croquette, handed over fresh-fried one at a time at the foot of Togetsukyo, is this town's standard. Kotokikijaya's sakuramochi is an unusual one, finished with only Domyoji dough and smooth bean paste, no cherry leaf, eaten with a view of the bridge. At the south end of Togetsukyo is % Arabica, for a latte facing the river and hills. Kyoto's matcha and tofu sweets are here too — and taking them with the scenery is the Arashiyama way.

How to walk this route

Start at the Randen Arashiyama station or JR Saga-Arashiyama. Begin with a fresh-fried croquette from Nakamuraya on Nagatsuji Street. Head south down the street toward Togetsukyo, and have sakuramochi with bancha at Kotokikijaya. Cross the bridge and buy a latte at % Arabica at the south end; sit by the river and watch the hills — that is this route's close. Cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons are very crowded, so early morning is comfortable. If you extend to the bamboo grove path, allow about another hour.

1SnacksNakamuraya Sohonten×CroquetteBy the foot of Togetsukyo they hand you croquettes one at a time, fresh from the fryer. Inside is smooth potato, faintly sweet, in a crisp, light coat. At around ninety yen apiece it is easy on the wallet and easy to eat one-handed as you walk. Visitors to Arashiyama often buy one first and head for the river — that kind of standard. Handed over piping hot in paper, carry it to the bank and eat with the view.Nearest Arashiyama Stn (Randen)Price ¥90 each 2SweetsKotokikijaya×SakuramochiArashiyama sakuramochi is unusual in not being wrapped in a cherry leaf. Kotokikijaya's is a refined thing — grainy Domyoji dough with only smooth bean paste — and without the leaf's salt the paste and rice come through straight. Served two to a set with bancha tea. You eat it right by Togetsukyo, at a seat overlooking the Katsura River, so in spring you can have sakuramochi while watching real cherry blossoms — a small luxury.Nearest Arashiyama Stn (Randen)Price ¥700 / 2 pcs 3Drink% Arabica Kyoto Arashiyama×Caffè LatteA coffee stand on the south end of Togetsukyo, at the edge of the Katsura River. Its signature latte, pulled with house-roasted beans, balances milk sweetness and espresso for a clean, easy drink. Takeaway by default: carry your cup to the bank and enjoy it facing Togetsukyo and the Arashiyama hills. The setting means it often draws a queue, but as a closing cup for Arashiyama — different from Kyoto's matcha sweets — it is a favourite.Nearest Arashiyama Stn (Randen)Price ¥540 4RiceSaga-tofu Ine×Yudofu SetArashiyama, blessed with clear water, is also a home of yudofu. At Saga-tofu Ine, house-made tofu is warmed slowly in a kombu-broth pot and taken with condiments and dipping sauce, served as a set with rice and yuba. The tofu is soft, the soybean sweetness coming through plainly, the broth and condiments drawing the taste taut. From the second-floor seats you can see the gate of Tenryuji and Arashiyama's green. Warm tofu soothes tired legs — a set to catch your breath between sweets and street food.Nearest Arashiyama Stn (Randen)Price ~¥2,000 5SnacksKotoimo Honpo×Grilled Mitarashi DangoA sweets shop near the entrance to the bamboo grove, famous for its large grilled mitarashi dango. Big dumplings are charcoal-grilled fragrant, then coated thick with a sweet-savoury sauce made fresh daily at the shop. One skewer is filling, the chewy dumplings wrapped in a sauce heavy with soy. There is also "Kotoimo" made from sweet potato, dango beyond mitarashi, and soft serve. On the way to the bamboo grove or Togetsukyo, easy to drop by for a skewer to eat one-handed.Nearest Arashiyama Stn (Randen)Price ~¥300 / skewer 6SeafoodTaisho HANANA×Sea-Bream Chazuke SetA sea-bream chazuke specialist in Arashiyama, its signature a set built around thin-sliced madai. First as sashimi dipped in sesame sauce, then over rice like a marinated bowl, and last poured with hot broth as chazuke — one sea bream enjoyed three ways. The fish is firm and sweet, well matched to the fragrant sesame sauce. In the calm interior, fullness rises as you eat through the sequence. In an Arashiyama of street food, a set for when you want to sit and savour fish.Nearest Arashiyama Stn (Randen)Price ~¥2,000 (set)
