Why you must eat itBy the foot of Togetsukyo they hand you croquettes one at a time, fresh from the fryer. Inside is smooth potato, faintly sweet, in a crisp, light coat. At around ninety yen apiece it is easy on the wallet and easy to eat one-handed as you walk. Visitors to Arashiyama often buy one first and head for the river — that kind of standard. Handed over piping hot in paper, carry it to the bank and eat with the view.
A butcher and deli on a corner of Nagatsuji Street, close to the Randen Arashiyama station. Its famous croquette is sold fresh-fried at the storefront, known as a headliner of the Arashiyama food walk. Besides croquettes it makes menchi-katsu and deli dishes with kuroge wagyu. Facing the main street toward Togetsukyo, it often has a queue, but the line moves fast. A standard first bite once you reach Arashiyama.
