Shirasu shops, Kamakura
×Raw Shirasu Bowl
Why you must eat itJust-caught raw whitebait over rice, the specialty of Kamakura and Shonan. Translucent little fish eaten smooth with ginger and soy. Freshness is everything, so you find it only near a port that lands them. In the closed season (January to early March) there is no raw version — it becomes boiled. Start with a bowl by the station.
Sagami Bay from Kamakura to Enoshima is shirasu country, and shops serving the raw bowl cluster by the station and along Yuigahama. The fishery closes each year from January to early March, when it switches to boiled shirasu. Being about freshness, the raw kind can sell out before noon.
