Shancheng Mini Tangyuan

×Mini tangyuan (black sesame)

Why you must eat itGlutinous-rice balls the size of a thumb-tip, floated in a sweet broth. Each holds a black-sesame filling that runs when you bite. Smaller than ordinary tangyuan, they slip down several at a time. They make a fine reset after a run of spicy things, and on Bayi Food Street many order a bowl to close out their hot-and-sour noodles or wontons. Eat them warm, scooped with a porcelain spoon.

Shancheng mini tangyuan is a long-standing Chongqing sweet — Shancheng, "mountain city," being the city's other name. Sold widely in dessert shops and snack streets, it comes in black sesame and also, unfilled, floated in fermented-rice wine (laozao). Heat is the lead of Chongqing food, but small sweets like this are tucked in at intervals to break the run of spice.
