Tianzifang & Dapuqiao Route

On the edge of the old French Concession, the shikumen lanes branching off Taikang Road are Tianzifang. Through brick paths turned into studios and cafes, you pick up Dapuqiao shengjian, Ruijin Road scallion pancakes and Huaihai Road sweets one bite at a time, a half-day walk gathered as you go.

When the shikumen lanes became a market

Tianzifang began as a cluster of residential lanes behind Taikang Road, brick shikumen terraces leaning shoulder to shoulder. About two decades ago galleries and studios moved into empty units; cafes, craft shops and small food stalls followed, and it grew into a maze. Laundry still sways overhead and residents share their days the same lanes as the visitors. The paths are barely wide enough to pass, and signs hang small on walls and doors. Here scent and queues are better landmarks than a map. Leave Dapuqiao station toward Taikang Road and the tangle begins at once.

A walk eaten one bite at a time

The food here is led less by a sit-down plate than by small things picked up on the move: shengjian from the iron pan, scallion pancakes baked against the oven wall, pork mooncakes off the griddle, rice sweets sold by weight, and a warm bowl of jiuniang rice balls to close. Each comes in ones and twos, wrapped in paper or a box to carry to the next lane. Alternating sweet and savory keeps half a day from tiring the palate. Prices are a guide and many small shops take cash, so small notes and coins keep things moving. One rest at a lane cafe, then finish the rest on foot, is about the right rhythm.

How to walk this route

Pick up a shengjian in SML Center, linked straight to Dapuqiao station, then come up to the street and head north on Ruijin No.2 Road. Collect a hot scallion pancake from Ah Da deep in the lane, climb to Huaihai Middle Road for the Guangmingcun pork mooncake, and choose tiaotougao and qingtuan at Shen Dacheng just beyond. Sweets in hand, double back to Taikang Road and into the Tianzifang lanes. Pass the studios and galleries and rest over coffee in the Kommune courtyard. Finish with a warm bowl of jiuniang rice balls at Qiaojiazha on Xiangyang Road South, behind Huaihai Road. About 90 minutes in all; allow half a day to linger. Lanes and shops crowd around midday, so early morning or late afternoon walks best.

包1DumplingsYang's Fry-Dumpling (SML Center)×Shengjian (pan-fried pork buns)The buns are packed edge to edge in a flat iron pan, lid on, half-fried and half-steamed. The base browns to gold while the top stays pale. When they come out, a cook spins the pan and scatters sesame and chopped scallion. The skin is on the thick side and chewy; bite in and hot broth seeps from the pork filling. The shop sits in the basement of SML Center, a turn from the Dapuqiao fare gates, with a near-constant midday line. Order two or four, with a small bowl of beef or vermicelli soup the way locals do. They are hot, so nick the skin first and let the steam out before you sip.Nearest Linked to Dapuqiao Stn, SML Center B2Price 18 CNY / 6 pcs 串2SnacksAh Da Scallion Pancake (Ruijin No.2 Rd)×Scallion oil pancake (congyoubing)The dough is worked with chopped scallion and lard, shaped by hand and rolled flat, first fried on both sides in shallow oil, then pressed against the inner wall of the oven to drive off the extra fat. The surface cracks into layers, and the bite brings up scallion and salt together. Each one is made to order, so expect a wait deep in the lane. Ah Da baked for years in an alley off Maoming Road South before moving to a narrow front on Ruijin No.2 Road. There is almost no sign; the sound and smell of frying are the landmark. Eat it hot straight from the paper bag, hands greasy as you walk, the way this district runs.Nearest Dapuqiao Stn, 8 min north on Ruijin No.2 RdPrice 8 CNY 肉3MeatGuangmingcun (Huaihai Middle Rd)×Fresh pork mooncake (xianrou yuebing)A savory mooncake: flaky layered pastry around a pork filling, baked crisp on an iron griddle. It has nothing to do with the sweet Cantonese kind, is eaten year round in Shanghai, and people queue at the window for a hot batch. The pastry shatters at a touch while the base, soaked with juice, stays moist. The filling is cleanly seasoned with ginger and soy. This old house on Huaihai Middle Road bakes day and night, the griddle visible through the glass. It is a walk up from Tianzifang or Ruijin No.2 Road; have each one wrapped in paper and eat it on the way back to the lanes.Nearest Dapuqiao Stn, 12 min to Huaihai Middle RdPrice 7 CNY / pc 甘4SweetsShen Dacheng×Red-bean rice roll & qingtuanTiaotougao is a glutinous rice roll wrapped around a slim core of red-bean paste, sometimes dusted with osmanthus. It is chewy against the teeth, the paste only lightly sweet. Qingtuan is a spring sweet whose skin is dyed green with mugwort around a filling; in recent years a savory version with salted egg yolk and pork floss has caught on too. Shen Dacheng is an old Shanghai rice-cake house that sells by weight from a glass case of the day. When the Tianzifang lanes leave you wanting something sweet, pick two or three at this shop toward Huaihai Road, have them boxed, and nibble as you walk. They do not keep, so finish them the same day.Nearest Dapuqiao Stn, 10 min toward Huaihai Middle RdPrice 10-14 CNY / 2 pcs 酒5DrinkKommune (Tianzifang)×Coffee & fresh-baked pastryA long-standing open-air cafe with tables spread across a shikumen courtyard in Tianzifang. In a corner walled with brick, it is a good place to sit mid-wander and rest over a strong coffee and something fresh from the oven. Mornings lean to brunch, afternoons to coffee, evenings to beer, so its face shifts through the day. Order at the counter inside; seats are scattered around the courtyard. Craft shops and galleries press in on all sides, and you can watch the crowd pass. The sweets change daily, often scones or cake. When the walk tires you, step a little out of the lane noise here.Nearest Dapuqiao Stn, 5 min to TianzifangPrice 30-40 CNY / coffee 甘6SweetsQiaojiazha (Xiangyang Rd South)×Glutinous rice balls in fermented-rice soupSmall glutinous rice balls simmered in sweet fermented-rice (jiuniang) broth, served warm. The faint ferment of the jiuniang, the sweetness of the rice, a ribbon of beaten egg and a spoon of osmanthus layer together, finished with dried osmanthus floating on top. The balls are small and unfilled, slipping down easily. Qiaojiazha is an old Shanghai dim-sum house where, alongside leishayuan and assorted rice cakes, this bowl is a regular order. The shop on Xiangyang Road South sits behind Huaihai Road, on the route running west from Tianzifang. To close a sweet lane-walk, a bowl of hot soup: it warms you and loosens the day. The flavor fades as it cools, so take it at the table while hot.Nearest Dapuqiao Stn, 14 min toward Xiangyang Rd SouthPrice 12 CNY / bowl
