Why you must eat itBeyond sweet potato, Kawagoe is in fact an eel town. Landlocked Musashino has a culture of river eel, and old houses remain. Grilled over binchotan, the skin turns fragrant and the flesh plump. After the sweet alley, closing with unaju in a tatami room is Kawagoe's other correct way to spend the day.
Kawagoe has eel houses running since the Edo period, and Ichinoya, said to date from around 1832, is a leading one. Far from the sea, Musashino grew a culture of river and channel eel. Many close a walk through the kura streets by taking their time over eel. Booking is wise.
