Why you must eat itCharcoal-grilled dango on Candy Alley, dressed only in soy. At ¥50 a stick, the price has held for decades. The surface is charred fragrant, the glaze not sweet but salty soy. Plainness itself, eaten with the very air of the sweets alley. Cheap enough to keep going.

One of the old shops that has grilled dango on Candy Alley for over fifty years. Candy Alley is a stone-paved lane running since the Meiji era, some 100 metres of dagashi, candy and dango shops. The soy smell of grilling dango, chosen among Japan's "100 Scent-scapes," is the very scent of this alley. Closed Mondays.
