Apom Manis × Apom

Why you must eat itA batter of rice flour, coconut and a little sugar is poured into small round iron pans and covered to steam-griddle. The rim is thin and toasty, the center plump and soft. Fresh off the pan the sweet coconut scent rises; eat it plain, or with banana or corn folded in. Have a few wrapped together in paper and eat them one at a time as you walk. A sweet to close a spicy day.

A stall of the Indian-Muslim sweet apom around Little India and Chowrasta. A row of small iron pans bakes several at once. Some shops also make steamed sweets like putu piring by a kindred method. Prices and hours are a guide, mostly afternoon into night.
