Original Egg Tart Bakery
×Portuguese Egg Tart (the Original)
Why you must eat itMacau's Portuguese egg tart is said to have begun at a small shop on this island. An English pastry maker settled in the village and reworked a Lisbon sweet with custard and a deliberate char — taken as the source of it all. The thick pastry stands in clear layers, and beneath a top blistered black in a fierce oven hides a custard soft enough to tremble. Some say the burnt caramel and egg run richer than the shops that spread the tart later. Weekends bring long queues and it can sell out tray by tray. Take a number and eat it warm looking out at the sea.
This egg tart is said to have gone on sale in Coloane in the late 1980s and become the model for the Macau-style tart. Charring the surface is its mark, and it later spread to the peninsula and beyond. Weekends and long holidays are especially busy, with long waits for the next tray. Prices and hours are a guide, so check on site, including whether it has sold out.
