Why you must eat itA tea room opened by a tea wholesaler, where you can take a quietly whisked bowl of matcha. Its signature is pairings of matcha and Japanese teas with wagashi, letting you compare teas by origin and taste. The space, a townhouse over a century old, is calm — step in from the bustle of Hanamikoji and it is another world. A good place, between stretches of the walk, to settle a mouth tired of sweets with a strong cup of tea.
A tea room run by Kitagawa Hanbee Shoten, an Uji tea wholesaler founded in 1861, opened in 2018 on the east side of Hanamikoji. You can taste Japanese teas — matcha, Japanese black tea, Japanese oolong — paired with sweets. A counter and small garden downstairs, sofa seating upstairs. It joins the eye of an old tea merchant to the comfort of a modern café, a new place for tea in Gion.
