Saryo Tsujiri
×Matcha Parfait
Why you must eat itFrom the bottom of the glass rise layers of matcha jelly, shiratama, bean paste, matcha ice cream and whipped cream. Drive the spoon down and the layers reach your mouth at once, the deep bitterness of the matcha mixing with the sweetness of the paste. It uses Uji matcha, so the bitterness stays firm. Generous in size — one is enough for a person. A sweet to sit down and take slowly.
A sweets parlour run by the old Uji tea house Gion Tsujiri, on the upper floor of its Shijo Street flagship. It offers matcha parfaits, chilled shiratama and zenzai, and the matcha parfait in particular is a byword for Kyoto matcha sweets. Being popular, it draws queues and waits at busy hours. Just a short walk east on Shijo Street from Gion-Shijo station.
