Gion Komori

×Anmitsu

Why you must eat itA sweets parlour in a former teahouse on the bank of the Shirakawa, where from the tatami room you eat looking at the stream and willows. Its signature anmitsu uses choice ingredients — kuzukiri made from Yoshino kudzu to order, bean paste simmered from Tokachi azuki — the slippery kanten and the richness of black syrup layering together. Matcha parfait and warabi-mochi are loved too. Among Gion's calmest seats, right for when you want to leave the busy street and linger.

A sweets parlour along the Shirakawa at Gion-Shinbashi, using the building of a former teahouse as it is. From the tatami windows you can see the Shirakawa and Tatsumi Bridge, tasting sweets amid a distinctly Kyoto mood. Anmitsu, matcha parfait, warabi-mochi are offered, the paste and kudzu prepared fresh each time. Being popular it can mean a wait, but once seated a quiet time passes. Savoured together with the view, a representative sweets house of Gion.
