Temple St Dai Pai Dong (seafood)
×Typhoon-Shelter Fried Crab
避風塘炒蟹
Why you must eat itCrab chopped into pieces, stir-fried over high heat with a mound of fried garlic, fermented black beans and chili. The golden garlic layered at the bottom of the plate is fragrant and clings to the meat. You crack the shell by hand and eat with your fingers, so you'll want a wet towel. The price is market rate — ask before ordering — and it's right for sharing among a few.
A typhoon shelter is the inlet where fishing boats once moored out of the storm. The fried-garlic stir-fry the fishermen made on their boats came ashore to become one of Hong Kong's signature seafood dishes. At the Temple Street dai pai dong, the flame of the tossed wok rises after dark, and tables of seafood and beer spread out.
