Katsuura Morning Market Sangayaki (grilled namero)

Katsuura Morning Market

×Sangayaki (grilled namero)

Why you must eat itNamero — local fish minced with ginger and miso — wrapped in a shiso leaf and grilled. If raw namero is good enough to make you lick the plate, grilling brings out a toasted edge. It was made by fishermen aboard their boats, and you eat it only in Boso. One piece in the morning.

Both namero and sangayaki are Boso home cooking. Grilled namero (namero being "lick the plate") becomes sangayaki, the name said to come from fishermen eating it up in the hills (sanga). At the Katsuura market they grill and sell it made from the day's local fish.
