Katsuura Morning Market
×Grilled Fish
Why you must eat itFish and dried fish landed that morning, grilled over charcoal right at the stall and handed over. The market air is astonishingly clean, and eating something hot amid the sea smell and charcoal smoke is worth the trip on its own. What's laid out depends on the day's sea. One skewer as you walk.
The Katsuura market ranks with Wajima and Takayama as one of Japan's three great morning markets, running for over four centuries. On mornings except Wednesday it sets up alternately in Shimo-Honcho (below Tomisaki Shrine) and Nakahoncho. Beyond grilled fish there are dried fish, vegetables and flowers, from around 6am until before noon.
