Why you must eat itIn the plaza before the Cisheng Temple in Dadaocheng, stalls line up in a row. The signatures are braised pork rice, pork-rib soup, the four-herb soup and pig's trotter. You carry what you order to round tables set under a great banyan in the temple grounds, and eat sitting beneath its shade. The local way is a few plates each of rice, soup and fried things, shared around. Lunch in the temple's easy air, dappled sun through the leaves, is another face of Taipei than the night market. It opens at midday and most close by afternoon. There are many dishes, so order a little of several.
Cisheng Temple is an old Mazu temple in Dadaocheng, and the ground before its gate is a stall street called "miaokou xiaochi." Many stalls have run for decades, busy with locals at noon. If the night market is the night face, this is the day face — grown-ups settled at shaded round tables, eating long over a glass of beer. Each stall has its specialty (a pork-rice shop, a soup shop, a fried-food shop), and you combine as you like. Basically cash only. Most run midday to late afternoon, closing if you come late. A corner a little away from the tourist noise, where everyday local life remains. Hours are a guide, so confirm on the spot.
