Miaokou Pork Bun & Four-Herb Soup

×Pork Bun & Four-Herb Soup

肉包・四神湯

Why you must eat itThe freshly steamed pork bun holds well-seasoned pork and a quail egg inside a plump white skin. With it comes four-herb soup — a clear white medicinal broth of lotus seed, fox nut, yam and other herbs simmered with pork small intestine. A splash of rice wine warms you through. The usual way: the bun in one hand as you walk, the soup drunk standing beside the stall. It sits right by the Xiahai City God Temple, and many stop by after paying respects. Plain but deeply savory — amid a Dihua Street of dry sweets and sugar, this warm bit of salt is welcome.

Miaokou is a long-running stall near Dihua Street's Xiahai City God Temple, known for two things: the pork bun and the four-herb soup. Four-herb soup is a traditional Taiwanese medicinal broth, said to settle the stomach, and a fixture of stalls and night markets. This stall is known to locals for pairing it with the bun. As a stall the seating is limited, so it's mostly eaten standing or taken away. Cash only. The Xiahai temple is famous for matchmaking, and many combine worship with eating. It runs mainly at midday and may close once sold out. Hours and closing days change, so confirm on the spot.
