Nijo Market Fruit Stall

×Yubari Melon

Why you must eat itIn summer, fruit shops piled with red-fleshed Yubari melon line Nijo Market. Order and they cut you a half, and as the spoon goes into the seeded hollow the ripe flesh slips loose. The scent is strong, and a faint acidity stays inside the sweetness, so it never cloys. A whole melon for a gift; to eat on the spot, a half or cut pieces, or a soft-serve topped with melon. Its season runs only from early into high summer — a plate not to hesitate over if you meet it.

Yubari melon is a red-fleshed melon grown in Yubari, Hokkaido, on sale from early into full summer. Several fruit shops in Nijo Market handle it, from whole melons for gifts to cut pieces and halves to eat on the spot, and soft-serve topped with melon. Grade and season swing the price widely; at the height of the season it is cheapest and sweetest. Most shops serve it chilled. A plate eaten standing in the market, or on a chair at the storefront.
