Why you must eat itA stand-and-eat soba by Nippori station. The signature is a giant squid-tentacle tempura that overhangs the bowl, sunk fresh from the fryer into the hot soba. You slurp it just before the batter drinks the broth and softens. A bowl to line your stomach at the mouth of Yanaka — cheap, fast, right for a shitamachi morning.
A famous stand-soba just outside Nippori's north exit. Beyond the squid tempura it does chrysanthemum-greens tempura and kakiage, a wide range known for their size. Open from early morning, good for lining your stomach before Yanaka Ginza. Buy a ticket and eat standing.
