Kita no Gourmet-tei

×Boiled Crab Tasting

Why you must eat itA seafood shop at the north end of Nijo Market, its storefront piled with beach-boiled king, hair and hanasaki crab. Order the tasting and legs of different kinds line the plate, letting you weigh their firmness and sweetness on the spot. From the hair crab you suck even the tomalley in the shell; the king crab you crack and draw the meat from its thick legs. Dear in price, but they pick you good ones by region and season. A plate to eat with hot tea in the cold morning air of the market.

Kita no Gourmet-tei is an eatery in a corner of Nijo Market, serving crab and fish bought by the adjoining fishmonger, Kita no Gourmet. Hokkaido's three crabs — king, hair and hanasaki — are all here, chosen in season. Besides eating in, it ships freshly boiled crab and sells souvenirs. Seafood bowls and grilled dishes line up too. Open morning to early evening, a plate you sit down to inside the market.
